Southern Highlands celebrates the traditional craft of wool coverlet weaving practiced by the women of Appalachia, in the Southeastern United States. They built rustic cabins in remote areas and filled them with home goods crafted from materials at hand. They lived by hunting, gathering and small-scale agriculture. For coverlets, women grew flax and cotton, raising sheep for wool they hand-carded and spun. Traditional colours of blue, red and green, woven on a light warp, were derived from walnut shells, indigo and coloured flora. Patterns range from circles to intricate eye-dazzlers, hand-loomed in the four-harness overshot method. The Appalachian artistry of the woven coverlet is preserved in museums and private collections.
